The Complete Cold Brew Tea Guide
What is cold brew tea, how do you make it, and how does it differ from hot brew and iced tea? Everything answered.
What Is Cold Brew Tea?
Cold brew tea is exactly what it sounds like — tea steeped in cold water. No hot water needed. Just place a tea bag in cold water and refrigerate for 4–8 hours, letting time slowly draw out the sweetness.
This slow extraction produces a smoother, naturally sweeter brew with noticeably less bitterness — because tannins and caffeine extract more slowly in cold water.
Cold Brew Tea vs Iced Tea: What's the Difference?
| Comparison | Cold Brew Tea | Iced Tea |
|---|---|---|
| Brewing | Cold water, 4–8 hrs | Hot brew + ice |
| Taste | Smooth, naturally sweet | May be bitter |
| Caffeine | Lower | Higher |
| Dilution | None (no ice needed) | Dilutes as ice melts |
How to Make Cold Brew Tea
- 1
Add tea bag
Place 1–2 cold brew tea bags into a sealed bottle or pitcher.
- 2
Pour cold water
Add 500ml of cold or iced water — no hot water required.
- 3
Refrigerate
Seal and refrigerate for 4–8 hours, or overnight.
- 4
Remove and enjoy
Remove the tea bag and drink. Keeps refrigerated for 2–3 days.
Does Cold Brew Tea Have Caffeine?
Yes, but less than hot-brewed tea. Cold water extracts caffeine more slowly, so a 500ml Sosia Tea cold brew contains approximately 20–40mg of caffeine — far less than a cup of coffee (80–120mg).
For those sensitive to caffeine or who want a relaxing evening drink, cold brew tea is a gentler choice than coffee.
